EU report shows healthy ICT growth
EU report shows healthy ICT growth ICT in Europe contributed nearly 50% of the EU’s productivity growth between 2000 and 2004, according to the latest report on i2010 from the European Commission. The software and IT service sector also recorded the most dynamic growth during 2006 and 2007, with a 5.9% increase. The statistics show that Europeans are rapidly adopting the latest technologies and embracing new online services, while businesses are investing in more advanced ICT solutions.

The i2010 report, which is updated annually, assesses the ongoing economic performance of ICT in EU Member States, and provides a benchmark for the effectiveness of the Commission’s digital policies.

"Our integrated European policy for growth and jobs is now starting to pay dividends," said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media. "However, let's not be complacent. ICT companies in Europe are still not able to profit from economies of scale in view of regulatory fragmentation that blocks the emergence of pan-European services and hurts the chances of e-communication operators and software companies to compete on the world market. The EU and its Member States need in particular to make a greater effort to remove the remaining impediments within the internal market for online services."
