Galileo to bring wide benefits
Galileo to bring wide benefits Europe’s Galileo satellite system will bring massive economic and commercial benefits to the EU, along with improvements to daily life for people around the world, the European Commission has claimed this week with the launch of a communication on the topic. The Green Paper on Satellite Navigation Applications is calling for opinions on the development of the technology, and the role of the public sector in creating a structured framework with targets for the programme.

One satellite from the programme is already in orbit, with a second scheduled for launch in 2007. The system is said to be more powerful than the existing GPS, and the overall satellite market is projected to be worth €400bn by 2025.

“The real value linked to the costs and efforts undertaken to bring Galileo into orbit is that it presents a unique opportunity for new applications, economic growth and job creation in the European Union,” said Jacques Barrot, European Commission Vice President. “These economic returns are many times higher than the costs of the system itself.”
